Industrial IoT and AI applied to manufacturing to optimize predictive maintenance and operational efficiency in packaging machinery production.

ILPRA’s story began in 1955, when the company was founded and immediately created the first heat-sealing machine for food packaging. Over more than 70 years of activity, ILPRA has become a global benchmark in the packaging sector — true tailors of packaging — capable of listening to market needs and crafting custom solutions for production facilities around the world.

CHALLENGE

The project aimed to improve the operational efficiency and predictive maintenance of packaging machines through the implementation of IoT technologies and the integration of a virtual assistant based on Azure Open AI.

The goal was to monitor machine conditions in real time, collect telemetric data, optimize production processes, and provide immediate support to maintenance staff — reducing downtime and improving service quality.

SOLUTION

PA Expertise designed and implemented an end-to-end IoT and AI architecture made up of seven key components:

  • IoT Sensors: installed on different parts of the packaging machines to collect data on temperature, vibrations, pressure, and other operational parameters
  • IoT Gateways: collection and transmission of data to the cloud for real-time processing
  • Azure IoT Cloud Platform: storage, processing, and analysis of collected data
  • Monitoring Dashboard: interactive real-time data visualization with detailed performance reports on machine status
  • Predictive Maintenance: machine learning algorithms to analyze historical data and anticipate failures or maintenance needs, reducing machine downtime
  • ERP/MES Integration: connection of telemetric data with management systems to optimize resource planning and allocation
  • Azure Open AI Virtual Assistant: maintenance support with answers to technical questions, step-by-step instructions, suggestions based on historical data, and real-time assistance via chat or voice commands

Composed of three companies operating across 15 locations nationwide and with more than 600 employees, we are one of the key players in Italy’s digital transformation.

Its operational headquarters are located in Mantua.

In November of the same year, through PA Expertise, Alveo acquired IT Strategy S.r.l., a company that supports the adoption of Microsoft infrastructures, Cloud solutions and Modern Workplace environments, also offering Managed Services with a model particularly suited to SMEs. IT Strategy specialises in compliance consulting and cybersecurity, with advanced competencies to address the latest regulatory requirements. Its distinctive assets include compliance analysis services and the proprietary Digital 365 suite for the digital management of business processes. Its operational headquarters are located in Vicenza.
